Renting a car in Paris and returning it in another city

A one way rental lets you rent a car in Paris and drop it off in another city, such as Nantes, Bordeaux or Toulouse, instead of driving it back. Europcar, Enterprise and the other rental companies charge a drop fee for the new return location, and that fee, not the daily rate, decides whether the one way car rental is worth it.

  • Most large networks (Europcar, Enterprise, Hertz, Sixt, Avis) accept a one way car rental between their French stations.
  • The drop fee depends on distance, the city pair and whether the vehicle is needed back at the pickup location.
  • Airport and main station desks give the widest choice of pickup and return points.

What is one way rental?

A one way rental is a car rental contract where the pickup location and the drop off location are different. You collect the vehicle at one branch, for example at a Paris airport or at Gare Montparnasse, and you return it at a second branch in another city. The rental agreement lists both addresses from the start, so the company knows where the car will end its trip.

The formula suits travellers who fly into Paris and fly out of Bordeaux or Toulouse, business trips that end in a regional office, house moves with a van, and road trips along the Loire where coming back to Paris would add a day of driving. The rental period, the mileage policy and the insurance options work as on a normal car rental. The only real difference is the return location and the fee attached to it.

Rental companies also use the term "one-way" for relocation offers, where the company itself needs a car moved from one city to another. Those offers exist on platforms such as Driiveme, which lists cars to drive between French cities for a token price, but with fixed dates and a short time window.

Which companies offer one way car rental in France?

All the major car rental companies present in Paris accept one way rentals inside France, with some limits by station and by car class.

  • Europcar has the densest network in the country. Europcar stations cover Paris, the airports and most regional cities, and in western France several branches run under the Europcar Atlantique franchise, including Nantes, Angers, Tours, Poitiers and La Roche sur Yon. A Europcar reservation from Paris to Nantes or Poitiers is therefore one of the easiest one way trips to book.
  • Enterprise belongs to Enterprise Holdings, the group behind the Enterprise, National and Alamo brands, and now presents itself as Enterprise Mobility. Enterprise car rental accepts one way trips between its French agencies, with the rate shown before you confirm.
  • Hertz, Sixt and Avis also run one way car rentals from Paris to the main cities: Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Lille, Rennes and Nantes.
  • Car sharing and mobility apps such as Getaround usually require you to return the car where you found it, so they rarely work for a one way trip.

Europcar and Enterprise are often the two companies that return the most results when you enter a Paris pickup and a regional drop off location, because both have stations in small cities as well as in large ones. If the return is at an airport, check the desks and opening hours at the Paris airports before choosing where to start.

How does the drop fee work?

The drop fee (also called a one-way fee or return fee) is the extra charge a rental company applies when the car does not come back to its pickup location. It pays for the cost of bringing the vehicle back, or of leaving it in a city where the company may not need it.

No official tariff exists: each company sets its own drop fee and changes it with demand. What makes it go up or down is predictable, though:

FactorEffect on the drop fee
Distance between the two stationsParis to Tours or Angers usually sits at the low end; Paris to Toulouse or Marseille at the higher end
City pairA route where cars flow back naturally (Bordeaux to Paris in autumn) costs less than the opposite direction
Car classA compact car is cheaper to relocate than a van, an SUV or a premium model
Same brand, same franchiseTwo branches of the same Europcar franchise (Nantes and Angers, for instance) often cost less than two independent stations
Crossing a borderReturning the car in Spain, Germany or the United Kingdom moves the fee to a much higher level, when it is allowed at all

Some companies show the drop fee as a separate line, others fold it into the daily rate. Always compare the total price at the last step of the reservation form, not the rate displayed on the search page. International returns follow their own rules, detailed in our guide to taking a French rental car across a border.

How to book a one way rental from Paris

The process is the same on every rental website or app:

  1. Enter the pickup location in Paris (airport, station or city centre desk).
  2. Untick "return to the same location" and enter the drop off location: Nantes centre, Bordeaux Saint-Jean station, Toulouse airport, Poitiers, Tours.
  3. Choose dates and times that match the opening hours of both stations. A branch closed on Sunday cannot receive the car.
  4. Compare the rate, the drop fee and the mileage policy. One way rentals usually include unlimited mileage in France, but check it on the rental agreement.
  5. Add options such as an additional driver, then confirm. You then receive a confirmation email and a reservation number to view, modify or cancel the booking.

Read the terms and conditions before you sign: the security deposit, the legal minimum age and the long term options are set by each company, and an additional driver must be named on the contract to be covered. Our page on adding a second driver to the contract explains the conditions. The fuel policy stays the same as for a return trip: on a full-to-full contract, you fill the tank near the drop off station. The rules are explained on our page about car rental fuel policies.

Popular routes: Paris to Nantes, Bordeaux, Tours or Toulouse

Western France is the easiest territory for one way car rentals from Paris. The A10 and A11 motorways link the capital to Tours, Angers, Nantes, Poitiers and Bordeaux, and every one of these cities has several rental stations at the train station, in the centre and at the airport (Nantes airport, Bordeaux-Mérignac, Tours Val de Loire).

A classic example: a couple lands at Charles de Gaulle, drives through the Loire Valley via Tours and Angers, and flies home from Nantes airport five days later. Returning the car to Paris would add around four hours of motorway on the last day. With a one way rental, they spend that time in Nantes instead, and the drop fee replaces the fuel and tolls of the return drive. The same logic works for Paris to Bordeaux via Poitiers, or for a longer road trip to Toulouse through the south-west.

Other destinations work just as well from the capital: Lille and Rennes in a half day, Grenoble, Montpellier or Nice for a longer travel experience. The further the destination, the more flexibility a one way rental gives you, and the more the Europcar or Enterprise search results vary from one station to the next. Plan tolls in advance on these long motorway legs; our guide to toll roads in France lists the payment options.

How to avoid or reduce drop-off fees

  • Stay inside one network. Returning the car between two Europcar branches of the same franchise, or two Enterprise agencies of the same region, keeps the fee lower.
  • Test nearby stations. Returning to Nantes airport instead of Nantes centre, or to Tours instead of Poitiers, can change the drop fee.
  • Book early and compare deals. The fee follows demand like the daily rate.
  • Look at relocation offers when your dates are flexible.
  • Use the business account of your company if it has one with a rental partner: corporate rates often reduce the one-way fee.

Returning your car in another city or from the airport

Can I return a rental car in a different city in France?

Yes. All major rental companies accept it between their French stations, as long as you declare the drop off location at the reservation. Changing the return city during the rental is possible by calling customer service, but the drop fee is then applied at the counter.

Is a one way rental more expensive?

Usually yes, because of the drop fee. Over a long trip, the extra cost is often balanced by the day of driving and the fuel you save by not coming back to Paris.

Can I pick up a car at the airport and return it in the city?

Yes. Paris airport to city centre, or Paris to a regional airport, are common one way combinations. Some airport stations add a location surcharge, visible in the total price.
