Automatic Cars in France: Less Common Than You Think
France has a strong manual transmission culture. Automatic vehicles make up a smaller share of the total rental fleet compared to the UK, USA or Australia. This matters if you require an automatic: booking well in advance — ideally several weeks before your trip — is the only reliable way to guarantee availability, especially in summer and during school holiday periods.
Which Categories Are Available as Automatics?
Availability varies by supplier and season, but you can generally find automatic options in the following segments:
- Compact and mid-size cars (most reliable availability year-round)
- Premium and business class sedans
- Luxury vehicles (automatic is standard in this segment)
- Electric vehicles (all-electric cars use single-speed automatic transmission)
- Minivans and people carriers (many models are automatic)
Economy class automatics are the hardest to find and book up fastest. If your budget requires the cheapest category, consider whether a manual compact might be a practical alternative for a short trip.
How to Filter for Automatics When Booking
On booking platforms, look for the «Transmission» or «Gearbox» filter and select «Automatic». Each car listing will show a «A» (automatic) or «M» (manual) code in the vehicle specification line. If you are booking directly with a supplier, state your requirement explicitly in the booking notes and call to confirm — do not assume the system has registered your preference. Always re-confirm 48 hours before pickup, as fleet availability can shift.
Cost Difference: Automatic vs Manual
Automatic rentals typically cost 15–30% more per day than equivalent manual vehicles. Over a 10-day holiday this adds up, but for drivers who are not confident with manual gear changes in unfamiliar traffic — particularly on Paris’s busy streets — the extra cost is well justified. Stress-free city driving in stop-start traffic is one of the clearest practical benefits of an automatic in France. On open motorways, the difference is negligible.
Electric rentals are worth considering as an alternative: all EVs are automatic, they are exempt from Paris ZFE low-emission zone restrictions, and they are often competitively priced against premium petrol automatics when incentives are factored in.
