The Paris Parking System at a Glance
Paris divides its parking into a patchwork of zones, each with its own tariff and permitted duration. On-street parking is metered in most central arrondissements (1st to 20th) and requires payment via the city’s Pay by Phone app (Paris À Velo) or the PayByPhone app. There is no coin parking in central Paris — payment is entirely cashless on public streets.
On-Street Parking: How It Works
In residential zones, registered local residents park for a reduced flat rate. Visitors pay the visitor tariff, which ranges from €4 to €6 per hour in central arrondissements and €2 to €4 per hour in outer districts. Maximum parking duration on-street is usually 6 hours. To pay, download the PayByPhone app, enter the zone number displayed on the nearest meter column, and pay for the duration you need. You must start payment as soon as you park — there is no grace period.
- Residential zones: residents only, visitors use visitor tariff bays
- Blue zones: free parking up to 1.5 hours with a parking disc (available at tabacs)
- P+R car parks: free or cheap parking near Metro stations, outside the Périphérique
Underground Car Parks
Covered and underground parking is the most reliable option for a rental car in Paris. Operators include Indigo (formerly Vinci Park), Q-Park and EFFIA. Rates run from €3 to €5 per hour or €25–40 for a 24-hour period depending on location and operator. Pre-booking via their websites or apps guarantees a space and sometimes secures a lower rate. Major underground car parks are located near all main tourist sites: the Louvre, Notre-Dame, the Marais, Montparnasse and the Champs-Elysées.
Avoiding Fines and Towing
Paris parking enforcement is efficient and unsentimental. Do not park on a yellow kerb line (delivery zone), across a driveway marked «Sortie de garage», or in a bus lane. Vehicles in clearly prohibited zones are towed to a fourrière (impound lot), and recovery costs around €130 plus a daily storage fee. Check signs carefully before leaving the car — if in doubt, use an underground car park for the night. It is simpler and often cheaper than a towing fine.
For an overnight stay, negotiate with your hotel for a parking arrangement or use the P+R car parks near the Périphérique if you do not need the car until morning. This keeps costs low and the car safe.
