How the French Toll System Works
France maintains one of Europe’s most extensive motorway networks, and a significant portion of it is subject to tolls. Péages — toll booths — are operated by private concession companies such as Vinci Autoroutes, Sanef and ASF. Costs vary by section, vehicle category and distance. Tolls are charged either at exit barriers or at intermediate barriers on very long sections.
Payment Methods at Toll Booths
French toll plazas accept several payment methods:
- Credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex at most booths)
- Coins and banknotes at staffed booths (not always available)
- Télépéage transponder (electronic tag, recommended for frequent users)
Contactless bank card payment is the easiest option for rental car drivers visiting France for a short period. Tap your card at the barrier and drive through. Carry your card accessible from the driver’s seat — toll booths do not have much patience for rooting through bags.
Estimated Toll Costs for Common Routes
Costs depend on vehicle category (rental cars are typically Category 1 or 2). Approximate one-way tolls for common Paris-origin routes:
- Paris to Lyon (A6, ~460 km): €35–40
- Paris to Bordeaux (A10, ~580 km): €40–48
- Paris to Nice (A6/A7/A8, ~930 km): €75–85
- Paris to Caen (A13, ~240 km): €18–22
- Paris to Strasbourg (A4, ~490 km): €35–40
Use the Via Michelin or Sanef toll calculator online before your journey to get a precise estimate for your specific route and vehicle type.
Avoiding Tolls
French national roads («Routes Nationales») and departmental roads («Routes Départementales») are toll-free and often scenic alternatives to motorways. However, they add significantly to journey times. For a trip from Paris to Bordeaux, the toll-free route takes 8–10 hours versus 5.5–6 hours on the motorway. For sightseeing legs of your trip, secondary roads are a pleasure; for covering long distances quickly, motorways justify their cost.
Some GPS navigation apps — Waze, Google Maps — offer a «avoid tolls» option, which routes you along free roads automatically. This can be useful for short detours around expensive sections.
