Driving the Loire Valley from Paris: Castles, Wine and River Roads

The Loire Valley by Rental Car: Why It Works

The Loire Valley — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — stretches for over 200 km along France’s longest river. Its chateaux, vineyards and Renaissance towns are spread across a wide area that no single public transport route can cover efficiently. A rental car transforms this region from a day trip into a genuine multi-day discovery, allowing you to visit lesser-known castles, stop at roadside caves, and time your visits to beat the crowds.

Getting from Paris to the Loire Valley

The A10 motorway from Paris (Montparnasse direction) brings you to Orléans in under 1.5 hours and to Tours in around 2.5 hours. If you prefer a scenic start, the D951 follows the south bank of the Loire from Orléans westward, passing through Amboise and Chaumont-sur-Loire before reaching Tours. This riverside road is one of the prettiest drives in France and adds only 30 minutes over the motorway route.

A Three-Day Chateau Circuit

Day 1: Arrive in Amboise via Blois. Visit Château Royal d’Amboise and the nearby Clos Lucé (Leonardo da Vinci’s final home). Stay overnight in Amboise or Chaumont-sur-Loire.

Day 2: Drive west to Chenonceau (the most visited chateau in the Loire, built over the River Cher) and on to Villandry with its extraordinary formal gardens. Arrive at Chenonceau before 10 am for the best photographs without crowds. Continue to Azay-le-Rideau for its island chateau, then overnight in Chinon or Saumur.

Day 3: Explore Saumur and its mushroom caves (troglodyte cellars), taste a Saumur-Champigny or Anjou white at a local domaine, and follow the river east before returning to Paris on the A85/A10. The drive back to central Paris takes around 3 hours.

  • Chenonceau: plan at least 2 hours, arrive early
  • Chambord: the largest Loire chateau, 45 minutes from Amboise
  • Villandry: the finest gardens, best in June and September
  • Azay-le-Rideau: small, romantic, beautiful river setting

Wine tasting is straightforward with a rental car: designate a driver for the day, or book a guided tasting at a domaine where spitting is genuinely expected. Vouvray, Chinon and Sancerre are all within easy reach of the main chateau circuit.
